Governor awards funds for energy assistance to low-income persons

MONTGOMERY- Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded more than $39.8 million in special grants to help qualified low-income households with the costs of their home energy bills.

The grants will enable 20 community service agencies to provide emergency funding to help low-income families remain comfortable in their homes during the hot summer months and cool winter months. $2.94 million has been allocated to Community Action Partnership of Huntsville-Madison and Limestone Counties Inc.

“With summer in full swing in Alabama, many residents require assistance to stay comfortable in their homes during sweltering temperatures,” Gov. Ivey said. “These grants will provide additional funding to assist in lowering home energy costs for those who need help the most.”

Gov. Ivey awarded the grants to agencies that manage programs at the local level. Those agencies receive applications from individuals who wish to be considered for assistance.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of the American Rescue Plan.

“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in partnering with community action agencies to provide assistance, particularly to those low-income individuals and families who are elderly, have a disability or have children in the home,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
