Stephen Jones to communicate nature’s wisdom to Madison Senior Center

MADISON – Dr. Stephen Jones of Madison will relate stories about his passion for everyday nature in a five-session stint at Madison Senor Center.

Jones will deliver his message on five Fridays, starting Sept. 17 and continuing through Oct. 15, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Jones, who uses the moniker ‘Great Blue Heron,’ is an author and applied ecologist. He recognizes and communicates the power and wisdom of nature and the lessons anyone can draw from the environment. “I find inspiration in nature’s beauty, magic, wonder and awe, whether in places of national significance or in our own backyards,” Jones said. A veteran educator, he is former CEO of Fairmont State and Urbana Alaska universities, along with Antioch University New England. He also chaired the board of University of the Arctic.

He uses his writing and speaking to educate, inspire and enable readers and listeners to understand, appreciate and enjoy nature and accept and practice earth stewardship. His books include “Nature Based Leadership,” “Nature-Inspired Learning and Leading” and “Weaned Seals and Snowy Summits,” which he co-wrote with Jennifer J. Wilhoit.

One of his local posts discusses the 300-acre Goldsmith Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Huntsville. “The Sanctuary is a place of naturalized beauty and magic. I say ‘naturalized’ because the pond below was a borrow pit, excavated for gravel and sand for nearby road construction 85 years ago. The reflected sky doesn’t care whether the pond is natural or naturalized!” Jones wrote.

At Desoto State Park, Jones observed the diverse plants that flourish along Little River, including yellow false foxglove in flower and the glossy, emerald foliage of galax.

Pale Indian plantain was nearing bloom. Southern bush honeysuckle bore graceful yellow flowers. Chanterelle mushrooms flourished at the trail edge. He also saw scarlet beebalm and button bush.

“Nature reveals so much to those willing to seek her truths. Inhale and absorb nature’s elixir. May nature Inspire, Inform and Reward you!” Jones said.
