Math-A-Palooza will take math into fun-filled activities
MADISON – Taking a technical discipline and transforming this study into an interesting time with friends is the idea that generated Math-A-Palooza 2022.
On April 16 as spring opens, the time has arrived again for the annual Math-A-Palooza for Madison City Schools. Bob Jones High School will serve as the event site.
Kimberly Cox spearheaded the start of Math-A-Palooza in Madison. At the time, she taught advanced math classes at Bob Jones.
For Math-A-Palooza, a team of math whizzes in Madison schools has been busy in organizing and planning a first-rate competition and celebration of mathematics. The competition is open to all students in grades 3-6, regardless of math team experience. Event organizers will separate math team members from students who don’t participate in a math team.
Madison City PTA Group has assisted with Math-A-Palooza and encourages students to enter the event as an excellent way to encourage exploration and enjoyment of mathematics.
Participants will check in at Bob Jones cafeteria at 8:15 a.m. The test will be open from 8:45 to 10 a.m. After the test, activities will end with awards at 12:15 p.m.
Students can decide to ‘celebrate’ with a challenging math test, chess corner, LEGO room, candy walk and other sessions. With Kahoot!, a teacher will create an interactive game in which students have ‘buzzers’ like a phone or digital device to select the correct multiple-choice answer.
In addition, participants can visit the ‘Solutions Room’ where they can learn how to solve problems on the tests. Competitors will receive a free snack, and other refreshments will be available for sale to parents and students.
Another option for Math-A-Palooza participants is the poster contest. In this Squared poster contest (4 squared = April 16), judges will review submissions for math content, creativity and presentation skills. Students can take their posters to Bob Jones cafeteria at 8:15 a.m. on April 16, the morning of the contest.
In 2014, Madison City Schools introduced Math-a-Palooza to generate more interest about math in elementary schools. Students outside Madison now join children from Madison’s seven elementary schools to participate in fun competitions, all centered on math.
