Players gain skills in Fall Scholars Chess Tournament

MADISON – Madison Elementary School hosted 137 students for the 2022 Fall Scholars Chess Tournament on Sept. 24.

“Some things can only be learned in a tournament setting — no matter how much practice kids get during the week,” Ranae Bartlett said. Bartlett is Executive Director of Madison City Chess League or MCCL.

“We’re always excited to see the growing number of unrated players trying their first chess tournament at Fall Scholars,” Bartlett said.

Jamie Golliver, Madison Elementary Principal, and Karlie Whitaker, Madison Elementary Chess Team Sponsor, welcomed everyone to campus for an enjoyable visit. The Yes Class sponsored the tournament. Every player received a goody bag, which included an explanation of enrichment programs for English and math.

The tournament included three rated sections: Championship, Under 1000 and Under 500. All players competing in the rated sections were required to have U.S. Chess membership so officials could rate their games at the end of the tournament.

“Some unrated players played in their first rated tournament in the Under 500 section. After the tournament, those unrated players received their first rating,” Bartlett said.

The top place-winners in each rated section follow, starting with first place and then descending:

The Under 500 section was the largest section with more than 40 competitors.
