2 dead, multiple lanes of I-565 closed after vehicle fire

Two people are dead and traffic is backed up after a vehicle fire this afternoon on Interstate 565 at County Line Road, according to Limestone County Coroner Mike West.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other died at Huntsville Hospital from injuries, West said.

The eastbound lanes of I-565 were closed as of 5 p.m., and one westbound lane was open, said Seth Burkett, Alabama Department of Transportation spokesman.

Eastbound traffic from I-565 is being detoured to County Line Road.

Traffic is backed up “a significant distance,” Burkett said. He advised motorists to avoid I-565 if possible.

Huntsville Police Department is working the incident, and the fire is still under investigation.
