Lady Senators soccer makes history with State Championship appearance

HUNTSVILLE – The Sparkman Lady Senators Soccer team has a date with destiny on Saturday at John Hunt Park.

A 1-0 victory on Thursday against Oak Mountain in the 7A State Semi Final Game has sent the girls in Cardinal to State Final on Saturday against Auburn.

Auburn downed Fairhope 4-0 to punch its ticket and do battle with Sparkman at John Hunt Park at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Huntsville.

It was a second half goal by Chelsey “Magic” Curtis that made all of the difference for the Lady Senators who kept Oak Mountain quiet.

Curtis finished an assist by teammate Sofia Sasan with a one touch bomb to the back post.

It’s no surprise that a clutch player like Curtis will also be representing Sparkman at the North South All-Star Game in Montgomery this summer.

The always reliable Sparkman goalie and team captain Audrey Edwards was hyper-focused down the stretch as her save count in the second half climbed to over six chances to preserve the clean sheet.

“I’m really proud of this group of players,” Sparkman head coach Samuel Tidmore said.

“They are the first team in school history as well as Madison County history to make a soccer state championship. We are so proud to have defeated a perennial powerhouse Oak Mountain to advance to the championship game. We will stay humble and prepare for Saturday.”

It all comes down to Saturday.

Sparkman has history in its hands this weekend.

Matches like this one against Auburn are what little girls grow up dreaming about when they practice in the yard with the soccer ball. All that is left is to go out there and take it.
