City of Madison creates “facilities director” position, hires Gerald Smith for role

MADISON – Madison Mayor Paul Finley announced Friday the creation of a new city position. According to Samantha Magnuson Director of Communications and External Affairs for the city, Gerald Smith has been hired as the city’s facilities director to manage the efficiency of all city building systems.

“The new position was recently added to the city’s employee roster to focus on maintaining and maximizing city facilities,” Magnuson said. “Smith brings over 22 years of invaluable experience at Teledyne Brown Engineering, planning building and machine maintenance and operational systems.”

“As Madison grows, our Municipality is acquiring more facilities for our community and employees. Mr. Smith will serve as an essential team member; especially with the addition of the community center, Hexagon complex and Sunshine Oaks,” said Mayor Finley. “We are excited to use his experience and skill set to provide excellent services to support our quality of life in Madison.”

“I am eager to establish my rapport with the city of Madison and support the daily functions of city facility systems,” Smith said. “My professional background in project management and maintenance capacities will make a significant contribution to the Madison community.”

Smith has officially started duties managing building work orders and learning the ins and outs of Madison’s facilities. His work will involve performing inspections and supervising proper maintenance and repairs, ensuring a strategic plan for maintaining the city’s real estate portfolio to improve service and eliminate foreseeable issues.
