Madison Academy to present ‘High School Musical – One Act Edition’

MADISON – A production that was the springboard for numerous, young Disney actors will take the stage as the 2024 Spring Musical when Madison Academy Theatre Department presents “High School Musical – One Act Edition.”

The popular movie from the Disney Channel led to “High School Musical – One Act Edition.” The students at East High School must contend with situations like meeting ‘love-at-first-sight,’ relatives, friends and juggling academics with their extracurricular activities.

The show opens when students return after winter break and their cliques gather, including The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes. They relive vacation time and anticipate the new year at East High.

In Ms. Darbus’ homeroom, Troy, the basketball team’s captain, realizes that Gabriella, whom he met on the karaoke stage during his ski trip, is now attending East High. The drama teacher gives detention because Troy was calling Gabriella.

Drama queen Sharpay disapproves when Gabriella and Troy check out the school musical’s audition form. Troy reports for basketball practice, and his best friend Chad encourages Troy to give up music.

Taylor, who’s science club president, learns that Gabriella is uber intelligent and recruits Gabriella for the science decathlon. During detention, Coach Bolton, Troy’s dad, confronts Ms. Darbus because his best players cannot miss practice for the upcoming championship.

Much to Sharpay’s dismay, Troy and Gabriella get a callback for the musical.

In the cafeteria, cliques leave their comfort zones when The Jocks and Brainiacs scheme to trick Troy and Gabriella to give up the musical and decathlon.

Luckily, a happy ending is impending when Troy and Gabriella sing their hearts out for the musical, and the East High Wildcats win their important game. The entire student body rallies in a win-win scenario.

“High School Musical – One Act Edition” is family-oriented and fun for all ages.

Songs include “Get’cha Head in the Game,” “Bop to the Top,” “What I’ve Been Looking For,” “Stick to the Status Quo,” “Counting on You,” “We’re All in This Together” and “Breaking Free.”

David Simpatico wrote the libretto (or book). Bryan Louiselle adapted, arranged and produced the music. Peter Barsocchini wrote the Disney movie, the basis for the play.

Performances are slated for April 18, 19 and 20 at 6:30 p.m., along with a 2 p.m. matinee on April 20 in the Madison Academy Performance Center. Doors will open 45 minutes before show time. Concessions will be made available.

Ticket prices are $15 for general admission, and $10 for students. Five-year-olds and younger will be admitted free. To purchase tickets, visit form.jotform.com/240776402196055.
