Teens can audition for Lab 87 at Fantasy Playhouse

MADISON COUNTY – Teenagers with a sincere interest in the performing arts have an excellent opportunity with auditions for “Lab 87: Teen Acting Conservatory,” a program by Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater & Academy.

Lab 87 is Fantasy Playhouse’s pre-professional training program designed for passionate performers from 13 to 18 years old. Teens will master various performance skills, including musical theatre, audition technique and classical text work.

The teens will gain a customized audition book and an updated resume. In addition, the grand finale will be a performance showcase.

Auditions are open to 13- to 18-year-olds on Aug. 2 at 5 p.m. and Aug. 3 at noon. Actors should prepare a one- to two-minute monologue. Students also can prepare a one-minute cut of a musical theatre song to sing acapella, if time allows.

Auditions will be held at Fantasy Playhouse, 312 Long Ave. SW in Huntsville. A sign-in sheet will be available at the audition — no need to sign up in advance.

Lab 87: Teen Acting Conservatory for the 2024-2025 season will expose students to on-camera acting (including self-tape), resume building, voice, movement and classical text work. Students will have the chance to learn about college programs and to meet area professionals in the performing arts field.

Lab 87’s goal is for students to graduate with necessary skills to work and train professionally as performing artists. Admission is by audition only, annually in August.

Former members are enrolled automatically in the upcoming year’s program. Lab 87 meets weekly on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. during the academic year.

Previous acting, musical theatre coursework (or both) or equivalent experience is required. Recommended prerequisites include “Acting/Musical Theatre,” “Performance Showcase” or both.

Tuition is $495 for the academic year (an Early Bird rate of $485 is available before Aug. 1). Payment plans and tuition assistance are available to students.

In other activity in Fantasy Playhouse’s Fall Semester 2024, the show for the Advanced Musical Theatre showcase will be “The Addams Family Young@Part.”

In this performance-intensive program, aspiring actors will gain stage experience by working on a musical. This showcase takes students through a rehearsal process in its entirety from auditioning to musical rehearsals and choreography.

In a synopsis, young Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with a smart, young man from a respectable family. Wednesday confides in her father, Gomez Addams, and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez must keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything promises to change when the Addams host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents.

The kids cast, ages 8-11, will rehearse on Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The teen cast, ages 12-18, will rehearse on Monday and Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Class fee is $345 for both casts.
