Two Harvest volunteer firefighters recognized for heroic actions

HARVEST – Two Harvest volunteer firefighters were recognized last week for their heroic actions on a day with multiple emergency calls.

According to fire officials, firefighter William Scofield and support member Kaydyn Davis were presented with a Meritorious Service Award by Harvest Fire Chief Jake Chappell.

On Saturday Aug. 17, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Harvest volunteers were called out to the Toney community to assist with medical care for two patients in cardiac arrest.

According to officials, firefighter William Scofield arrived first on scene and found two male patients in a bedroom, both in cardiac arrest. He quickly assessed the scene and quickly checked a pulse, attached an AED, and started providing quality chest compressions.

Support member Kaydyn Davis arrived second on scene and began helping by providing BVM ventilations. Approximately 10 minutes into the event, the patient had regained a pulse.

After HEMSI arrived on scene and began ALS treatment, another cardiac arrest call was dispatched in the Harvest community. HEMSI and other Harvest members remained on scene while Scofield responded with Deputy Chief Drew Gilbert to the third cardiac arrest.

“Firefighter Scofield and Support Member Davis’s quick response to the first call, recognition of the severity of the medical emergency, quality chest compressions and ventilations resulted in a successful patient outcome at the time of arrival to the hospital,” a Facebook post from the Harvest VFD stated.

Chief Chappell said the award was to highlight the dedication shown by two volunteers and their ability to handle a stressful situation.

“Due to the outstanding effort shown during three cardiac arrests in a onehour timeframe, both members actions qualify them for the Meritorious Service Award. The Harvest Volunteer Fire Department is honored to have selfless members that provide top notch care to the citizens of the District 4 community.”
