Madison Public Library ready for Halloween treats with movies, crafts

MADISON – Madison Public Library promises all treats and none of those annoying tricks with their lineup in October, leading to Halloween.

• Decoupaged pumpkins – On Oct. 10, adults can attend a relaxing session to decoupage pumpkins with blue willow embellishments from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Auditorium 2. (Decoupage involves decorating objects with paper cutouts and a finish.)

Registration is required. To register, visit calendly. com/madisonstudio/ adult-craft-pumpkins. For more information, email nbahr@hmcpl.org.

• The MAD Movie-AThon- O-Rama This hilarious movie to usher in Halloween is “Young Frankenstein,” which will be aired in Auditorium 1. The auditorium will open at 6 p.m., and viewers can bring snacks. The movie is recommended for adults (19 years old minimum).

Filmed in 1974, “Young Frankenstein” is one of Mel Brooks’ best movies with sight gags, burlesque humor and suggestive language as he retells the tale. Gene Wilder portrays the doctor’s grandson, Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced Fronk-ensteen). The all-star cast includes Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Cloris Leachman and Teri Garr.

“Young Frankenstein” pays homage to the classic era of monster movies. (Why DID the hump on Igor’s back constantly shift from one side to the other?)

• Read to a Therapy Dog — On Oct. 13, school-age children from six to 12 years old can engage in reading to a therapy dog to improve that all-important skill. The session starts at 2 p.m. in the Program Room.

Many children feel more at ease reading to an attentive dog. The 15-minute session will include a trained therapy dog from Therapy Partners Inc.

The child should bring a book to read or choose a library book. A grownup must stay in the room during the reading session. Registration is required. To register, visit go.hmcpl. org/TherapyDogReading.

• Fall gardening – In the Master Gardener Series, newcomers to the area or to gardening skills can learn from experts about procedures to garden in North Alabama. This session on Oct. 15 runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon in Auditorium 1.

Marcus Garner, Urban Regional Extension Agent, will discuss the types of vegetables to plant this fall and when. Garner will share gardening tips to get a garden ready for next spring. The session is intended for adults (19 years old minimum). For more information, email creagle@ hmcpl.org.

• Halloween witch’s hat – Anyone at least 16 years old can complete a beginner’s sewing project to make a custom witch’s hat for Halloween fun. Head to The Studio on Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m.

Participants must provide their own fabrics – 1.5 yards of woven, not stretchy, fabric. Heavy cotton, canvas or upholstery fabric is recommended. Registration is required; to register, visit calendly. com/madisonstudio/ sewing-witch-hat. For more information, email nbahr@hmcpl.org.

• MAD Movie-A-Thon-O-Rama – Watch the 1988 remake of “The Blob” that creeps, leaps, slides and glides across the floor. Adults (at least 19 years old) can view the movie for ‘scary fun’ on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.

The movie shows the adults who won’t believe teenagers about a space creature that crash lands in their small town. This movie contains language, situations and humor in adult tones. Feel free to bring food.

• Halloween creatures – On Oct. 24 at 4 p.m., children can have a spooky good time by creating their own pumpkins, witches, bats and mummies with art supplies.

• MAD Movie-A-Thon-O-Rama – “Creepshow” involved a collaboration for Stephen King and George Romero. The duo joined fear-making forces on this homage to horror comics they both read in the 1950s. Adults only for the film that airs on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.

• Boo Bash – All ages are welcome for this Halloween extravaganza on Oct. 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Auditorium 1. Guests will enjoy crafts ideas, a puppet show, trick-or-treating antics and more. Costumes are highly encouraged!

• Fever Dream Cinema – On Oct. 31 at 6 p.m., teenagers and adults can deduce the symbolism of “The Halloween Tree,” based on Ray Bradbury’s book. The film won an Emmy for “Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program.”

In addition, other activities will include Little Builders architecture club on Oct. 15; Madison History Association members presenting “West Huntsville Mills: Merrimack and Lowe” on Oct. 15; and “How to Search Ancestry. com” on Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon.
