Madison Academy scores resounding 48-7 win over JP II, fighting for post-season spot

HUNTSVILLE – The high school football regular season still has two weeks remaining, but for some teams fighting for playoff berths the postseason has basically already started.

Count Madison Academy among those squads.

A resounding 48-7 Friday night home win over St. Pope John Paul II at Bill Washington Stadium was just one leg of a journey the Mustangs hope ends with one of the fourth postseason berths in Class 4A, Region 8.

The Mustangs stand 4-4 overall and 4-2 in region play with league games remaining at home against Plainview this week and then at Westminster. Both will be critical to Madison Academy’s playoff aspirations.

“It looks like we’ll be third, fourth or out,’’ Mustangs head coach Bob Godsey said.

The Mustangs led the Falcons 21-0 after one quarter, 35-0 at halftime and 48-0 entering the fourth.

Currently, Randolph (6-2, 6-0) and North Jackson (6-2, 5-1) are firmly in command atop the region standings. Following those two are Westminster (5-3, 4-2), Madison Academy (4-4, 4-2), Plainview (44, 4-2), New Hope (3-5, 3-3), Madison County (1-7, 1-5) and DAR (2-6, 0-6).

Godsey can only hope his team, which entered the season without a ton of experience, can live up to the coming challenges.

“I thought we played well, took care of business in terms of what we needed to accomplish,” he said. “We got a lot of guys involved (Friday night) that we needed to get involved, hopefully building some confidence in terms of making plays.

“But we gotta be able to do those things in a big game and that’s kind of where we have struggled a little bit, especially offensively is in those big-game type deals.’’

Tie-breakers will likely decide not only seeding but who gets into the postseason.

“It’s the playoffs already,” Godsey said. “We gotta basically win or go home. So, it’s kind of the way we’re looking at it.’’
