MCSO: Family found in Jan. 7 house fire died by murder-suicide

MONROVIA – A house fire in the Monrovia area earlier this month where three bodies were found has turned out to the scene of a murder-suicide, stated the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday evening.
According to press release from the sheriff’s office, detectives with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded on Jan. 7 to a residential structure fire at 109 Forestbrook Drive in Monrovia to assist the State Fire Marshals Office.

A preliminary investigation at the scene and an examination of the vehicles present suggested that the residence was still occupied at the time of the fire. Subsequent investigation revealed the remains of three individuals inside the residence. The bodies were transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for further examination. Forensic analysis concluded that each individual had sustained fatal injuries prior to the fire.

“A thorough scientific examination of the three bodies has conclusively revealed the deceased individuals as Harold Celestine, 46, Marie Celestine, 49, and their daughter, Meliyah Celestine, 16,” stated the press release. “The preliminary findings from the scene have been corroborated through an autopsy examination conducted by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Based on the cumulative evidence gathered to date, including the autopsy results, the cause and manner of death for each individual have been determined as follows:

‣Harold Celestine (husband)

Cause of death ruled homicide (gunshot)

‣Meliyah Celestine (daughter)

Cause of death ruled homicide (gunshot)

‣Marie Celestine (wife)

Cause of death ruled suicide (gunshot)

Sheriff Kevin Turner shared, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragic event. Our hearts go out to those who are grieving, and we truly hope that they can find some sense of healing and closure in the days to come. The families and their loved ones remain in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
