Blue Apple Books in downtown Madison to host three meet-the-author sessions

MADISON – Three authors’ visits to Blue Apple Books will look at a range — from children’s books to benefit a local foundation to a teacher who explores the ways that we learn and remember facts.

Blue Apple Books’ address is 14 Main St., Suites B and C in downtown Madison. Robin Dauma owns the book store.

On Feb. 13, customers can participate in the promotion, “Books to Love for Kids to Love” to purchase children’s books (with themes for Valentine’s Day and “You Are Loved”) at 20 percent off to donate to Kids to Love. This promotion includes Valentine’s Day. Shoppers can buy onsite or preorder at shopssouthandpine. com.

Kids to Love serves children living in foster care and provides clothing, Christmas gifts and scholarships for the next steps of their education. Kids to Love also operates Davidson Farms, a foster home for girls.

Also on Feb. 13, author Kelly Mize will visit the store from 4 to 6 p.m. She has authored the children’s book, “The Beautiful Story Within Me.” Tasha Jones, who serves as Operations Director for Kids to Love, will provide acoustic music from 6 to 7 p.m.

On Feb. 16 from 1 to 3 p.m., Blue Apple Books will welcome Sonnie Hereford, IV, for a discussion and reading from books written by and about his father, Dr. Sonnie Hereford, III, and his family’s role in the integration of Huntsville City Schools in 1963.

Hereford will read from his father’s book, “Beside the Troubled Waters,” along with “Seeds of Freedom,” which recalls Huntsville’s time of integration. “His dad, Sonnie Hereford, III, bravely walked him in the doors of Fifth Avenue Elementary School in September 1963 after days of being blocked,” Dauma said.

Madison author and educator Blake Harvard will visit on Feb. 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. for his book launch and signing of “Do I Have Your Attention? – Understanding Memory Constraints and Maximizing Learning.”

Harvard’s book “explores memory processing, how students learn, and offers practical guidance to help teachers tailor their instruction to be the most efficient and effective for learning,” Harvard said. At James Clemens High School, he teaches advanced-placement or AP psychology.
