Bob Jones, James Clemens, Sparkman wrestlers in state tournament

HUNTSVILLE – Over 600 boys wrestler’s will gather at the Von Braun Center beginning today for the Alabama High School State Championships. The action begins at 10 a.m. with the last matches scheduled for 6 p.m. at Propst Arena.

This year’s tournament marks the first time that a girls championship is sanctioned by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Sparkman, which won a girls championship two years ago before the sport was sanctioned, is among the team’s in the Class 7A field. Among the Lady Senators competing is junior Kalea Loving who competes at 165 pounds. She won a state title last year.

The girls brackets are broken into 1A-5A and 6A-7A. The boys are awarded titles in 1A-4A, 5A, 6A and 7A.

Bob Jones, James Clemens and Sparkman all have representatives in the boys 7A field, led by the Patriots with six qualifiers. The Senators follow with three qualifiers and James Clemens two.

Huntsville is the defending 7A champion, the first team title in school history. Mountain Brook in 6A also won its first championship. Scottsboro took the 5A crown, its seventh overall, and Weaver claimed its 12th championship in 1A-4A.

The following wrestlers earned berths in the state championship brackets at the North Super Section in Birmingham last week.

Sparkman – Hayden Mason (Sr., 144, 35-13); Sean Lydon (Jr., 157, 42-3); Jackson Perry (Sr., 175, 38-10)

All boys wrestlers listed seek their first individual state championships.
