TARCOG breaks ground for new headquarters in Huntsville’s MidCity district

HUNTSVILLE – A vacant one-acre lot of Alabama red clay on Corporate Drive in Huntsville’s MidCity District will transform during 2025 to reveal a new 25,000 square-foot office building for Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments or TARCOG.

Construction cost for TARCOG’s facility will be $8 million.

“We are very excited to have reached this point,” Executive Director Michelle Gilliam Jordan said. “It’s taken nearly two years of thoughtful planning, but we believe the building plan is perfect for our needs now and into the future.”

Since 1968, TARCOG has unified municipal, county and state governments and federal agencies to work as a single team focused solely on improving the region in Alabama that includes DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall counties.

TARCOG consists of member governments from the five-county region and 48 municipalities, according to State Rep. Laura Hall (D-Huntsville), who was guest speaker at the groundbreaking.

“Today is about celebrating the start of construction on this new building, but it’s also about honoring the history and the people who have previously worked at and who continue to take TARCOG into the future,” Hall said.

On average, TARCOG answers 4,000 calls annually from people in DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall counties who need some form of help with food, medical supplies, prescription medications, caregiver support – the list is long.

However, every day, TARCOG personnel answer those calls and offer help. More than 900 TARCOG clients eligible for nursing homes received care at home with the Medicaid Waiver program, which saves Alabama Medicaid approximately $82 million.

Recent efforts by TARCOG Economic Development and Planning staff resulted in $11.3-million in grants secured in this region. The funding is focused on everything from improving parks to updating sewer lines, developing land-use plans and funding police equipment purchases for member governments.

Jordan said having this new office space will mean so much to the board, member governments and staff.
