Colquitt named Madison Hospital’s VP of Clinical Operations

MADISON – In her new role as Vice President of Clinical Operations, Renee Colquitt wants Madison Hospital to be the best place to work, the best place to receive healthcare and the most trusted entity in the community.

Enthusiastic about her promotion, Colquitt said she loves “healthcare, the people (patients and staff), the Huntsville Hospital system and the community. To be directly involved in how this health system grows and evolves is pretty exciting.”

At age 19, she started working at Huntsville Hospital as a Patient Care Technician. After graduating from nursing school in 2005, she worked in the Surgical Trauma ICU for about 18 months.

“After having my daughter, who spent time in Neonatal ICU, I (transferred) to the Regional Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Women and Children’s Hospital for six years,” Colquitt said.

Colquitt graduated as Nurse Practitioner in Neonatology and accepted the role of Nursery Coordinator at Madison Hospital in 2012. As a charter employee, Colquitt has watched “Madison Hospital grow from the ground up. I’m ready to help push the possibilities of what we can do.”

Since then, she has worked in several positions, including Lead Coordinator of Obstetric Services and most recently as Director of Perinatal Services.

As Vice President of Clinical Operations, Colquitt works in the Administration division with nine direct reports. Any clinical area reports to her — from pharmacy and lab, to imaging and all nursing areas.

Colquitt is responsible for day-to-day operations: patient throughput, budget and supplies, strategic development, input for staff education, policy review and regulatory readiness, along with mentoring/ coaching the leadership team. Colquitt thoroughly enjoys interacting with the staff. “That’s my best day when I’ve been in the units, talking with everyone working on the frontlines . . . knowing I can help make even just one thing a little easier for them or to explain something they didn’t understand.”

Just before starting as VP, Colquitt helped in organizing a Shared Governance Committee. “I’m a strong believer in the staff having a voice. Having a SG committee allows staff from across the hospital to have a seat at the table to discuss topics that affect their workflow and patient outcomes,” she said.

“Madison Hospital has always respected the voice of the employee, but this committee gives a more structured approach and helps staff tackle problems in real time,” Colquitt said.

In addition, Colquitt is pleased with the Diversity Board. For Diversity Month, she asked all employees to share a photo of themselves and facts about their home country or culture. After compiling comments, she created a presentation that scrolled in the hospital cafe’s information board.

“The staff really enjoyed sharing things about their home and learning about everyone else’s diverse background,” Colquitt said. She hopes for even more participation in 2026.

A native and current resident of Albertville, Colquitt drives a 75-minute daily commute to work. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Science in Nursing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a master’s degree in Nursing/Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at the University of South Alabama.

Her husband Josh Colquitt works as a Special Agent Senior for the State Bureau of Investigation. Their daughter Sydnee, 19, attends the University of Alabama. For entertainment, the Colquitts enjoy watching football games.
