Four winners certified in city council elections
MADISON – Winners of four district elections in the city of Madison were certified at last week’s city council meeting.
Four candidates ran uncontested for four district seats in this year’s municipal election. Alabama Code states that if a candidate remains uncontested after the deadline to register as a candidate has passed, he will “be deemed elected to such office” and will be certified by the Mayor and City Clerk. Madison City Clerk Lisa Thomas issued certificates of election to those four candidates at the city council meeting.
Among the four candidates, one is a returning city council representative. Maura Wroblewski was reelected by default to District 1.
The other three candidates were David Bier for District 2, Billie Goodson for District 3, and Alice Lessmann for District 5.
“I can promise the citizens of District 3 it will be my goal to start transitioning and working with Billie and making sure he’s up to speed and ready to go when he gets here,” said current District 3 Councilman Teddy Powell. “I equally would like to extend congratulations to Alice Lessman who is running unopposed for District 5. I am so pleased that she decided to run and that she’s unopposed. She’s going to do an out- standing job representing the residents of District 5,” said Councilwoman Ranae Bartlett who currently represents District 5.
Districts 4, 6, and 7 will go to a vote as planned on August 25. The candidates for those districts are:

Kenneth Jackson John Seifert (incumbent) With Mayor Paul Finley not seeking re-election, the mayoral race has become a contested contest. Three candidates, Ranae Bartlett, Margi Daly and Steve Smith, have entered the field. Both Bartlett and Smith have served on the city council in years past. Bartlett currently represents Council District 5 and has also served on the Madison City School Board. Smith is currently the Madison City Administrator under Finley.
Madison City Council President and Council District 7 representative John D. Seifert II is trying to stay on for a third term. He will face Kenneth Jackson in the upcoming election.
Incumbent Karen Denzine has thrown her hat in the ring for a second term, but she has two challengers, Scott Harbour and Erica White.
With the departure of Gregg Shaw in Council District 4, two newcomers will face each other for the open seat. Rachel Homolak and Michael McKay have qualified to run for that position.
Polls will be open citywide from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 26.
