Madison Academy travels to Randolph for convincing 49-7 win
HUNTSVILLE – Madison Academy traveled for the second straight week to start its 2025 football season, but this time enjoyed a much different outcome in its Class 4A, Region 8 opener last Friday night at Randolph.
Daylen Scott rushed for three touchdowns and had a pick-six, quarterback Charleston Owens threw for two TDs and ran for another after picking up a teammate’s fumble in the backfield, and linemen Cam Wilson and Ajay Seaton anchored a defense in a convincing 49-7 win.
Madison Academy (1-1 overall, 1-0 region), which lost 51-27 to Mars Hill last week, led at each quarter break 28-7, 42-7 and 49-7.
“We had a really good week of practice,’’ Madison Academy head coach Bob Godsey said. “We had some guys that wanted things to be different. We’ve still got a long way to go. We’re still a very young team, but it’s a lot easier to improve when you see some reward.’’
The Mustangs, who fell 44-26 at Mars Hill in Florence to open 2025, host DAR (1-1, 0-1) ) on Friday at 7 p.m. in another region clash.
The Mustangs lost to both the Panthers and the Raiders to start last season 0-2.
“We’re sitting a lot prettier than we were at this time last year,’’ Godsey said. “We’ve still got a young group. We just want to keep growing.’’
Against Randolph, the Raiders tied the game at 7-all on their first possession behind a 1-yard run by Jonathan Billions.
It was all Madison Academy after that.
“I feel like we had a pretty good practice leading up to this game,’’ Scott said. “We started off quick, we started off hot. Defensively, we gave up a touchdown early on, but we locked in after that. We had a great game plan.’’
Scott scored on runs of 1, 4 and 11 and had a 60-plus yard interception for a TD. Owens threw TD passes to Cameron Childress, a 78-yard catch-and-run, and a 24-yarder to senior Zyan Williams. Owens collected the fumble and raced 11 yards for another score.
Senior Donathan Buchanan made all seven extra point attempts.
“I think defensively, we made a huge step forward, mainly just in the mentality of trying to be physical and doing our job,’’ Godsey said. “The deal last week was we had guys in positions to make plays that we didn’t make. We made a few more (Friday), so that’s a positive.’’
Randolph (0-2, 0-1) is at Plainview (1-0, 1-0) this week.
“The mindset I had out there was to dominate,” Wilson said. “I mean, that’s all you really can do – dominate and do what you’re supposed to do.’’
