Madison City Chess League’s 2025 Halloween Chess Tournament to be held Oct. 25

Madison City Chess League’s 2025 Halloween Chess Tournament to be held Oct. 25

MADISON – Friendly ghosts, witchy hags and animated chess figures will gather for the annual themed contest at Madison City Chess League’s 2025 MCCL Halloween Chess Tournament.

Interested players are encouraged to register now. “Don’t wait until the last minute to register. Registration will close at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22,” MCCL Executive Director Todd Guthrie said.

The date for the Halloween tournament will be Oct. 25, and the tournament site will be Madison City Schools Stadium, 211 Celtic Drive. If case of inclement weather, the tournament will move to Mill Creek Elementary School, 847 Mill Road.

The tournament will have Rated sections for kindergarten through third grade; kindergarten through fifth grade; and kindergarten through twelfth grade. Because of the rated tournament, each student is required to have US Chess membership. To register, visit the main tournament page; click the “Registration Information for Rated Tournaments” box, and complete subsequent pages.

The MCCL Halloween Chess Tournament also has two Non-Rated sections: K-2 and K-5.

On tournament day, the event will open with a meeting for players at 9:45 a.m. The approximate times for rounds will be 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:20 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. Time control will be Game 20/d5.

Registration deadline will be Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. Registration fee for MCCL members is $20. Players who are not members of MCCL will pay $30.

Following the Halloween theme, players can win prizes for their costumes. The categories will be “Best Mask,” “Scariest Gloves,” “Best Chess-Themed Costume,” “Most Creative Costume” and winner of the tournament dance-off. In all sections, players who rank in first through fifth place will receive awards.
