Mustang on a roll as they win over New Hope 33-10

MADISON – Madison Academy quarterback Charleston Owens is on roll, and he’s pulling his teammates along. Owens was voted as the Huntsville Times regional Player of the week in a voting by fans in al.com’s poll last week after piling up over 300 yards in total offense with four touchdowns in a big 57-56 win at North Jackson in Week 7.

He’s up for the honor again following Friday night’s 33-10 Class 4A, Area victory over New Hope.

The sophomore, who scored the game’s final TD and then ran in a 2-point run to provide the difference against the Chiefs, was sharp again against New Hope as the Mustangs won their sixth straight and kept pace with Plainview atop the region standings.

Owens went 20-of-23 for 271 yards and two touchdowns passing while running three times for 33 yards against the Indians.

“He’s been throwing up good numbers for most of the year, to be honest with you,’’ Mustangs coach Bob Godsey said. “He’s getting a little better each week. We’re trying to grow him.’’

Madison Academy (6-1 overall, 5-0 in the region) will travel Friday to take on St. John Paul II (3-4, 2-4) at Joe Davis Stadium at Wicks Family Field. The Falcons are coming off a 44-13 win over DAR.

“They’re much improved, especially offensively,’’ Godsey said. “They are a much-improved team from the last couple of years.’’

Four players attempted passes last week for JPII led by freshman Hartwell Eleazer. He completed 6-of-9 for 116 yards with two TDs and one interception. Senior Mark Andrzejewski had three receptions – two for TDs – for 92 yards.

Madison Academy, ranked No. 6 going into the New Hope game, has a huge road game looming Oct. 24 at No. 8 Plainview (7-0, 5-0). The Bears are coming off a 35-24 win at North Jackson.

The Mustangs then close the regular season with a home game Oct. 24 against Westminster.

“I think the key for a lot of people is when you get to this point of the season, it starts to get long and old, maybe even boring because you’re doing a lot of the same things,’’ Godsey said. “They call them reps for a reason because you’re getting repetitions, you’re repeating things over and over.

“But the goal is to try to improve and the teams that can stay focused and continue to improve will be around to compete for region championships, make runs in the playoffs, things of that nature,’’ Godsey said. “So, you know, that’s certainly what we’re trying to do is try to get better, keep growing.’’

North Jackson and Randolph have matching 3-2 region records behind the leaders. They’re followed by Madison County (3-3), Westminster (2-3), JPII (24), New Hope (1-4) and DAR (0-6).
