Madison man arrested after 18-month vandalism spree

Nathanial Jinnong Yao

MADISON – An 18-month string of vandalism incidents has come to an end after the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) said they have arrested a Madison man and closed 24 criminal mischief cases.

For more than a year, HPD’s West Precinct officers and General Investigations Unit worked to identify the person responsible for a series of overnight incidents targeting defense contractor businesses and personal property near Explorer Boulevard. Despite limited leads and the challenges of investigating crimes committed in darkness, the department remained persistent.

A break in the case came on Wednesday, April 2, around 4 a.m., when an officer spotted a suspicious vehicle in the 600 block of Discovery Drive. A records check identified the registered owner as Nathanial Jinnong Yao, 28, of Madison, who matched the suspect description developed from surveillance footage in earlier cases.

On Monday, April 13, investigators secured nine arrest warrants for Yao.

Around 4:45 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop near his residence on Rebecca Pines Drive, taking him into custody without incident.

Investigators then executed a search warrant at Yao’s home in the 100 block of Rebecca Pines Drive, where they recovered evidence linked to multiple criminal mischief cases.

Yao was transported to HPD’s Criminal Investigations Division for questioning before being booked into the Madison County Jail on the outstanding warrants. Yao is charged with: Two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, and five counts of third-degree criminal mischief.

HPD says the arrest closes 24 cases and reflects the diligence, dedication and teamwork of West Precinct officers and investigators who remained committed to identifying the suspect and bringing the investigation to a close.
