Free, public Wi-Fi coming to downtown Madison

Thanks to a partnership between Madison Visionary Partners and Meta, historic downtown Madison is taking a step into the modern age. A $19,400 grant from MVP and Meta is facilitating the installation of Wi-Fi in downtown Madison.

The grant stemmed from the long-standing relationship between MVP and the City of Madison and Meta’s community action grants.

“MVP frequently partners with the City of Madison by serving as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit partner, which allows us to help expand opportunities to secure funding and apply for grants that may not otherwise be accessible. It’s a strong partnership that ultimately brings more resources into our community,” said MVP Executive Director Christina Hearne. “Through our network and ongoing conversations, we became aware of Meta’s grant opportunities focused on strengthening local infrastructure. This project aligned perfectly with a clear need in downtown Madison, and we were proud to work alongside the City to pursue funding that will have a lasting impact.”

The Wi-Fi will be free for public use and is expected to support the downtown economy.

“This will make a meaningful difference for both visitors and businesses. For the public, it means being able to stay connected during events, easily access information, and share their experiences in real time. For businesses, it creates more opportunities to engage customers, support transactions, and benefit from increased foot traffic. Overall, it helps create a more welcoming, connected, and vibrant downtown environment,” said District 3 city councilman Billie Goodson.

The addition of free, public Wi-Fi comes as Madison continues to grow and the downtown area continues to see a rise in activity from an increasing number of public events and more businesses operating in the area.

“Downtown Madison is truly the heart of our community, it’s where people gather, where small businesses thrive, and where we host events that bring thousands of visitors each year. As that activity has grown, the need for reliable, modern connectivity has become increasingly important. For the City, this project is about supporting that growth in a way that strengthens both the economic vitality and the overall experience of our downtown,” commented Madison Mayor Ranae Bartlett.

The grant from MVP and Meta was accepted by the Madison city council at the April 27 meeting in the finance committee report.
