Madison Academy boys knocked out in OT

HUNTSVILLE – While Bob Jones found success in extra time, the Madison Academy boys were as fortunate as Susan Moore’s Braulio Zavala scored a golden goal in the first minute of overtime of a 3-2 win Thursday night.

The game matched the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs and No. 2 Mustangs.

Senior Braulio Zavala scored in the opening minute of overtime, sending the Bulldogs (20-2-2) past Madison Academy (18-4-0) and into the Class 1A/3A boys championship game Friday.

Susan Moore held a 24-7 shot advantage. Madison Academy got five saves from goalkeeper Coulter Andruss. Goalkeeper Alex Tomas had one save for Susan Moore. The Bulldogs also led 9-3 in shots on goal.

Madison Academy went ahead 1-0 just 2:38 into the game when Jack Hughes scored on an assist by Drew Wallis. Susan Moore’s Francisco Piceno answered with a goal in the sixth minute.

In the second half, Isaac Mejia scored on a penalty kick to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 in the 61st minute. Wallis scored to knot the score at 2-all, assisted by Henry Yelverton.

The teams played to a 2-all tie in regulation, as Madison Academy’s Drew Wallis scored on an assist from Henry Yelverton with 13½ minutes to go in regulation.
