Mayor Bartlett launches ‘Madison Cares’ for pastors’ unified solutions
MADISON – Sometimes, the solution to a problem is right in front of you, but you need a different perspective to see it. Mayor Ranae Bartlett viewed community needs at a different angle and had crystal-clear vision to organize a new group.
During this year’s State of the City address, Bartlett announced the launch of Madison Cares, a group of clergy in Madison who will engage in fellowship, prayer and proactive service for the community. The initiative focuses on identifying community needs and resources while strengthening the bonds of Madison’s faith-based community.
To help in shaping Madison Cares, Bartlett assembled a group of pastors, including Spencer Beach, Building Church; Dr. Tommy Gray, Asbury Church; Dr. Mike Oliver, Trinity Baptist Church; Huey Hudson, Restoration Foursquare Church; and William Plott, Valley Presbyterian Church.
Madison Cares’ first meeting on Feb. 12 was held at Toyota Field in Town Madison. Faith leaders came together to hear the mayor’s vision and begin building relationships. They expressed their gratitude and acknowledged that they didn’t know each other. When this meeting ended, the pastors and Bartlett prayed for the city.
Then on April 16, Madison City Schools hosted Madison Cares’ second meeting to focus on needs of students and their families. A survey was sent to each Madison church asking the senior pastor to identify issues that they see as the community’s greatest need and resources that they want to learn about.
Additionally, Pastor Mike Oliver is leading a Pastor Fellowship group that meets every other month. Madison pastors gather to pray for the city and build relationships.
Bartlett’s vision became an immediate priority in late January during the crisis at Sutton Apartments on Shelton Road. Approximately 30 families were forced to move because Madison Utilities disconnected water service after the property owner failed to pay this bill.
To help in securing housing for students and their families, Madison City Schools leaders offered to help. Pastor Beach and congregation members at Building Church supported the remaining families.
“At State of the City, Mayor Bartlett revealed the details about this initiative that she had been quietly organizing behind the scenes — one rooted in connection, collaboration and community care. Even before taking office, the mayor knew that she wanted to create a space for regular dialogue with Madison’s faith community,” Amanda Jarrett said. Jarrett serves as Director of Operations and Communications for the City of Madison.
Madison Cares is open to leaders of all faiths who share a commitment to serve the community. For information about involvement with Madison Cares, email Amanda.Jarrett@madisonal.gov.
