Bob Jones cruises in Top 10 volleyball clash

MADISON – Bob Jones moved up one spot in the first volleyball regular season rankings released Thursday, then showed it was worthy of the lofty spot with a 3-0 sweep over visiting Spain Park.

Bob Jones (8-2), ranked No. 3 by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, defeated No. 5 Spain Park (9-1) in straight sets 25-16, 25-19, 25-12.

Earlier this week, Bob Jones defeated Arab 2-1 and Southside 2-0.

The Lady Patriots next join Madison County at Buckhorn for a tri-match Tuesday.

James Clemens flips record: In New Market, the Lady Jets downed Arab 2-0, lost to host Buckhorn but continued to put distance behind following a slow start.

James Clemens, which started the season 0-4, have won five of their last six and is now 7-7 heading into the Ironman Tournament at Huntsville.

Earlier this week, the Lady Jets (7-5) ran their winning streak to six games with wins over Muscle Shoals 2-0 (25-15, 25-16) and Lawrence County 2-0 (25-17, 22-25, 15-12).

Against the Lady Trojans, middle hitter Veronica Cabrales had a .571 hit percentage. She also had five kills. Addison Langford led the team eight kills.

Against Lawrence County, Julia Celani had 13 kills and Langford had nine, and setter Kylie Mills had a 1.000 hit percentage.

James Clemens, which was scheduled to play Arab and Buckhorn on Thursday, began the season with four straight losses.

The Lady Jets play in Huntsville’s Ironman Tournament this weekend.

Hartselle 3, Madison Academy 1: In Hartselle, the Public Class 5A, No. 6 Lady Tigers remained unbeaten at 10-0 against the No. 8 Double-A Private Lady Mustangs.

In a best-of-five match, Hartselle won 25-18, 25-17, 15-25, 25-18.

Earlier in the week, Madison Academy (3-6) lost to Briarwood Christian (9-1), ranked second in Private Double-A, 2-0 by scores of 25-21, 25-17.

The Lady Mustangs play in Huntsville’s Ironman Tournament this weekend.

New Hope 2, Sparkman 1: In Harvest, the 6A Lady Senators fell to the 3A Lady Indians. Sparkman (5-5) was also scheduled to play Danville as part of a tri-match.

Sparkman defeated visiting Lee 3-0 earlier in the week.

Sparkman stat leaders: Zelaya Conley-Steger 4 (5.8 KPS, 26 K; .326 HP, 6 BLK), Kaeli Houston 4 (5.8 DPS, 23 D), Isabella Mayfield 4 (2 SA, 24 R), Jasmine Maina 4 (20 A).

The Lady Senators play in Huntsville’s Ironman Tournament this weekend.
