Bob Jones, Madison Academy claim milestone wins
MADISON – The Seth Parker era at Bob Jones got under way in earnest Friday night with a 28-21 win over visiting Athens at Madison City Stadium.
The Patriots (1-1) lost a mistake-plagued 35-6 Week 0 season opener at Hartselle in Parker’s debut.
Against the Golden Eagles, Bob Jones led 14-7 at halftime after a scoreless first quarter, then scored 14 points in the fourth to overtake Athens (1-1)
Kaydon Bledsoe rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries to pace the Patriots.
Bob Jones (1-1) will be the visitor this week against city rival James Clemens (1-1) in the Madison Bowl, which also serves as the Class 6A, Region 4 opener for both teams at Madison City Stadium.
Madison Academy 28, West Morgan 21: Around four miles away down the road from Madison City Stadium, Mustangs head coach Bob Godsey notched his 250th career win.
Madison Academy (1-1) got four touchdowns from junior quarterback Charleston Owens, including the game-winner on a 3-yard run. William McMonigle intercepted a pass to seal the victory with 2:47 left to play.
Owens passed for three TDs–55 yards to Tahj Phillips, 45 to Cameron Childress and 10 to Cole Norris.
Sparkman 38, Austin 21: In Harvest, the Senators rebounded from a tough 17-13 loss to Spain Park in the season opener.
Sparkman (1-1) and Austiin (0-2) begin region play this week with the Senators traveling to Gadsden City (1-1).
The Black Bears led 21-17 at halftime.
Parker 34, James Clemens 7: In Birmingham, the script flipped from the first week to second for both the host Thundering Herd and the Jets.
Parker, which lost 32-14 to Vestavia Hills to open the season, kept James Clemens, a 45-24 winner over Austin in Week 0, scoreless for the last three quarters and pulled away for a non-region win.
The 5A No. 5 Thundering Herd, held the Jets to just 46 yards of total offense and minus-46 yards rushing in total rushing.
