BJHS announces its 2002 Hall of Fame honorees

Bob Jones High School will honor five alumni with induction into the Bob Jones High School Hall of Fame during halftime at the homecoming game on Oct. 4.
The honorees will also ride in the Homecoming Parade on Oct. 3.
To qualify, the candidate must have been a graduate of Bob Jones High School, a resident of Madison for a period of at least 10 years; or, if not a graduate, must have made a significant contribution to Bob Jones High School, and meet the following selection criteria:
* Significant accomplishments and contributions while a student at BJHS through scholarship, service, leadership, athletics, and/or
* Significant accomplishments and contributions while at post-secondary educational institutions, including degrees attained and fields of study, an/or
* Professional background and work experiences, and/or
* Significant accomplishments and contributions to civic and community involvement, and/or
* Other significant accomplishments including awards, honors, offices held, etc.
The honorees are:
Linda Burgess
Graduated from Bob Jones High School in 1988.
Earned associate's degree at Calhoun Community College in 1990.
Earned bachelor of arts degree at The University of Alabama.
Her parents are Pankie Mae and Charlie James Burgess.
She is currently the head women's basketball coach at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa.
Burgess played professional basketball in Switzerland, Turkey, and Israel, and the U.S. Women's National Basketball League from 1997-2000.
Beth Morphew Cannon
Graduated from Bob Jones High School in 1990.
Attended The University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Co-owner of The Dance Company in Madison and married to Todd Cannon. They have three children.
Cannon is an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church, including being a Sunday school teacher, junior high youth counselor, choreographer and director of the Asbury Dinner Theater. She is a volunteer for the Mental Health Association of Madison County, a member of the Huntsville/Madison Chamber of Commerce, the Madison Chamber of Commerce, and the Better Business Bureau. She is also a former choreographer for the Alabama's Junior Miss state and county pageants.
Randy Murphy
Graduated from Bob Jones High School in 1983.
Earned a bachelor of arts degree from Athens State College.
Earned a master's degree from Alabama A &M University.
He is currently working on Ph.D. from NOVA Southeastern University and serves as principal at James L. Cowart Elementary School in Athens.
He is married to Angela Migliaccio Murphy and has one daughter.
Murphy has been named to Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who Among American's Teachers, and Who's Who Among American Colleges.
Gusti Linnea Newquist
Graduated from Bob Jones High School in 1992.
Earned a bachelor of arts degree from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. summa cum laude.
She currently works with the National Network of Presbyterian College Women and is the daughter of John and Paula Newquist.
Newquist was a Yeager scholar who studied at Exeter College, Oxford University, and Antonio de Nebrija, Centro de Estudios Hispanicos. She served as the AMERICAORPS VISTA Public Relations/Fundraising Coordinator for Kentucky's Habitat for Humanity. She also directed media relations for the 1997 Jimmy Carter Workshop, Hammering in the Hills.
She also served as a Presbyterian delegate to the Ecumenical Decade Festival tin Harae, Zimbabwe.
Clara Toney
Graduated from Bob Jones High School in 1975.
Earned a bachelor of science degree from Alabama A &M University.
Earned a master's degree from Alabama A &M University.
Toney is working on an Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University – with a projected date of completion December 2002.
She is currently is a resource specialist for Madison City Schools and is the daughter of Isabella Toney and the late James Toney.
She was honored as both female athlete of the year and Phi Beta Kappa at Alabama A &M University. She is an active member of the Pine Grove Church Christian Workers Fellowship. Her civic activities include the nursing home ministry, prison ministry, and monthly assistance to needy member of the community.
