Art league announces new officers The Art League of Madison announced its new officers for the 2003-2004 year. They are: President, Mike Baran; Vice President, Colleen Cassidy; Treasurer, Carol Baran; Secretary and Valerie McLaughlin. The Art League of Madison meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at the historic Clay House, 16 Main Street in Madison. The Madison Art League is a group of local artists dedicated to the promotion and education of creative and original work. Pre-college class planned Calhoun Community College will host "Making College Count," a free presentation to orient first-year college students. The presentation will be held Tuesday, July 1, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Chasteen Student Center on Calhoun's Decatur campus. Reservations are required. Time running out to apply for disaster relief The Federal Emergency Management Agency will accept applications through July 11 for disaster recovery assistance, for those who suffered losses as a result of early May storms. Call 1-800-621-3362 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to register for help.
Nursing home quality can now be checked A new online service is available that lists quality of care information for Medicare/Medicaid certified nursing homes in Alabama. The web site is www.medicare.gov; click on Nursing Home Compare. You can also call 1-800-633-4227.
Lodge at Cheaha reopens Bald Rock Lodge at Cheaha State Park has re-opened, following complete refurbishment. The building will sleep 30 or more guests, it has a commercial kitchen and meeting space in the dining hall for more than 100 people. The lodge is ideal for family reunions, weddings, receptions and corporate retreats. Mount Cheaha is Alabama's highest point, at 2,407 feet. The park contains hiking, biking trails campsites, fishing, swimming and nature programs. Cheaha State Park is located off highway 281 in northeast Alabama. Classic movies presented The Art Krewe of the Huntsville Museum of Art and Comcast announce the first of the 2003 summer series Classic Movies in the Park. The first movie, "The Wizard of Oz," starring Judy Garland, will be shown on Friday, June 27, on the back, west wall of the museum, at beginning at 8:30 p.m. The Art Krewe encourages everyone to dress up in costume as his or her favorite character. The top three costumes will receive prizes.
Concerts in the park feature rock-n-roll, blues Concerts in the Park, held at Big Spring Park in Huntsville, will feature Margie Sings Patsy, Patsy Cline songs; Tina Turner Revue, rock-n-roll; and Open Delta, blues and lover songs, on Monday, June 30. The first band performs from 6:30 p.m. until 7:10 p.m. and the second band will perform from 7:20 p.m. until 8 p.m. The concerts are free to the public. Bring lawn chairs or blankets.
Shop Madison First planned This year's Madison Chamber of Commerce sponsored "Shop Madison First" business exposition will be held on Saturday, July 19 at Bob Jones High School, in the cafeteria. For more information, call the MCC at 461-0518.
