Sparkman’s Owen gets pair of assists in win

HUNTSVILLE – Sparkman rising senior Steven Owen recorded two assists as the North downed the South 7-1 in the Alabama All-Star Week boys soccer contest at John Hunt Complex.
Owen had three shots on goal but was held scoreless.
But his first assist in the opening half helped the North take a commanding 3-1 lead. He added another assist in the second half.
Bob Jones’ Jonathan Mitchell did not have a shot in the game.
Hoover’s Alex Morton scored two first-half goals in the win.
The South girls opened 2010 All-Star Week earlier in the day with a 3-2 win over the North – just the South’s second win in the series and first since 2007. The North girls now own a 7-2-1 series advantage and the North Boys are 6-3-1 versus the South.
Bob Jones’ Jessica Salinas had two shots on goal in the North’s loss. Madison Academy defender Danielle Berryman did not record a shot in the game.
All-Star Sports Week is an event of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA).
The football all-star contest is set for 7 tonight at Alabama A&M’s Lewis Crews Stadium to conclude the All-Star week.
North Boys 7, South 1
Morton took four shots in the first half, finding the net just 4:12 into the contest for a 1-0 lead. Kennedy Pope of Huntsville supplied the assist. The South tied the score 1-1 on a goal by South MVP Costandinos Whitehead of Alabama Christian.
Morton got his second goal four minutes later with teammate Chris Burris of Briarwood Christian supplying the assist. Stutts finished the first-half scoring with a goal with just 4:19 left in the half as Steve Owens of Sparkman made the pass.
Pope made it 4-1 in the second half with his first goal of the night for the North. Pope scored again 95 seconds later on a pass from John Imwalle of Oak Mountain. Morton, named the North MVP, picked up his third goal in the second half at the 53:57 mark. The final goal was a 45-yard shot by Samuel Dean of Austin with just under 10 minutes to play.
John Drake of Cullman and Patrick McDonald of Pelham coached the North team while Jason Richardson of Murphy and Jasper Rogers of Baker directed the South.
South Girls 3, North Girls 2
UMS-Wright’s Tyler King had two shots on goal Monday afternoon and made the most out of both of them as the South beat the North 3-2 to claim just the second victory for the Southerners in the Alabama All-Star Week soccer match.
The North, which now holds a 7-2-1 edge in the series, led 1-0 at the half thanks to Grissom forward Courtney Hurt’s goal at 26:42. Abby Allen of Sylacauga stretched the lead to 2-0 with a goal four minutes into the second half.
McGill-Toolen’s Courtney Harlan, South forward who missed narrowly a first half goal that zipped past the North goalkeeper and hit the net’s side bar, finally got her team on the scoreboard with a nice kick into the net from the left side two minutes after Allen’s goal.
King tied the match for the South with 15:02 remaining with a soft kick that rolled slowly into the net. Her winning goal came with 3:57 left to play and the South defense held off the North’s efforts the rest of the way.
Hurt had eight shots on goal to earn North MVP honors and Harlan had eight shots on goal for the South.
Jay Bruner of Northview coached the winning South team.
