Mustangs fall in regular-season finale

Coming off eight consecutive wins, Madison Academy fell to West Limestone High School, Oct. 29, 35-32.

After falling behind in the third quarter, the Mustangs did come back toward the end of the game, but West Limestone pulled ahead by a field goal in the last few minutes of the game.

The Mustangs fell behind in the first quarter, 6-3, after West Limestone drove the ball down field and then Madison added a 35-yard field goal.

Madison Academy faired better in the second quarter when Thomas Nay recovered a fumble at the 50-yard line, but West Limestone would not be denied and increased the lead to 9-3.

Slowly but surely, the Mustangs came back and Dobson scored a touchdown, putting them a little closer to West Limestone.

The Mustangs scored two touchdowns in the quarter off of a Joe Dobson 2-yard run and a Kim Jackson interception return to give Madison Academy a 16-12 lead.

West Limestone added a touchdown in the third quarter to take an 18-16 lead, and Limestone kept the ball out of the Mustangs’ hands in the quarter, limiting Madison Academy to just ne possession.

Limestone began the fourth quarter capitalizing on their drive with a touchdown and a two-point conversion.

But, the Mustangs offense didn’t keep the ball for long on the ensuing possession as West Limestone quickly intercepted and scored a touchdown, placing them 32-16.

The future of the game looked quite dim for the Mustangs until Jake Hamlett successfully carried the ball for a 20-yard touchdown run to put the team back in the game, 32-22.

The biggest run of the night for the Mustangs came from wide receiver Hunter Olive, who carried for an astonishing 61 yards before being taken out right before the end zone. Jackson completed the drive with a touchdown, and Olive got another two-point conversion, tying the score.

West Limestone added a field goal with just under a minute remaining to seal the victory.

“That’s life,” said Madison Academy head coach Eric Cohu after the loss. “You’ve got to turn the page and focus on the game at hand. We would have liked to have won the game.

“Some good things did happen. We came from behind 16 points, tied it back up, but a lot of things we have to get better at or we won’t go far in the playoffs,” Cohu added.
