Snow expected this weekend, schools may close

Four to seven inches of snow is expected to cover the Huntsville/Madison area this weekend, with the heaviest expected to fall Sunday night and Monday morning.

Saturday is expected to be mainly sunny with a high of 40 and low of 23.

Sunday’s temperature is expected to peak at 38 degrees with a low of 30, and have a 60 percent chance of precipitation, which may fall in the form of snow.

Bobby Jackson, administrator of transportation, pupil services, and athletics for Madison City Schools said as of now, he doesn’t know if the city’s schools will be closed next week, but will keep the community posted.

“We don’t know anything right now, it’s just a call you never know around here,” Jackson said. “But, we will be watching the weather on Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. If (the weather) is going to be a problem, we’ll make a decision Sunday night and if not, Monday morning.”

He said the public would be notified by various media outlets.

The situation is similar with Madison County Schools.

Geraldine Tibbs, director of communications/public relations for MCS said they too would make a decision around the same time.

“We will assess the weather and be in contact with the EMA throughout the weekend and we will make a decision if it seems there will be anything that will be hazardous for driving that would put kids and employees in harms way,” Tibbs said. “It is too early to decide now. But, if there is a problem, we will certainly look at that as an option.”
