Medication Take-Back scheduled for Saturday

The prescription drug Take-Back is back.

The Take-Back Initiative, implemented by the Partnership for a Drug Free Community is giving locals the opportunity to dispose of unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications in a safe way.

Last September was the first time the organization put on the initiative.

Deborah Soule, executive director for Partnership said last year’s turnout was a major success, with more than 700 pounds of drugs brought in.

“You’d be surprised how many people have expired medications and don’t know what to do with them,” Soule said. “It was amazing to find out how many people had medicines and they just didn’t know what to do.”

Soul said since September, the organization received an “overwhelming response” from the community, asking what they should do with their unused medicines.

Soule recommends putting unused, crushed pills into coffee grind or in a cat’s litter box.

“This also is an awareness that prescription pill abuse is an epidemic and that we need to be very careful,” she said.

They are taking back legal pill and liquid medicines.

The medicines will be taken to the solid waste disposal, where they will be burned.

Three locations will be open Saturday for the Take-Back: The Jaycees’ Building, located at 2180 Airport Road; the Monrovia Recreation Center, located at 254 Allen Drake Road, off Jeff Road; and the Madison Police Department, located at 100 Hughes Road.
