Donating for a difference

Marcy Smith and Julie Woodland will accept dress donations on May 7 at Gigi's Cupcakes.

Two teens are cleaning out their closets and asking Madison to make a difference.

Marcy Smith, a senior at Bob Jones High School, and Julie Woodland, a senior at Madison Academy, are teaming up to collect formal attire for the Junior League of Huntsville’s Butterfly Boutique.

Woodland said she was motivated to do something after realizing she and her three sisters had several formal dresses. She read an article about the boutique and immediately wanted to participate.

“These girls reached out to us,” said Lee Shaw, chairman of the Butterfly Boutique. “I just think that’s phenomenal and very reflective of the kind of girls that this community is bringing up and sending out into the world to represent Madison.”

The annual boutique allows high school students to select prom attire after being nominated by their school counselors.

“A lot of people especially people my age have been blessed and it gives us an opportunity to give back to people our age who are less fortunate,” Smith said.

Smith and Woodland are collecting dresses, jewelry, shoes and handbags through clubs at both high schools, and will hold a joint drop-off drive on May 7 at Gigi’s Cupcakes and Asbury United Methodist.
