Madison matron makes impact on community

Debbie Overcash has always had a love for small towns, but Madison provided the right fit for her and her family.

Overcash is not only Madison City Councilman Tommy Overcash’s wife, but she’s also an active member of multiple organizations and groups in Madison. She is an active member of Friends of the Library, the Madison Arts Council, the Madison Rotary Club, the Madison Beautification and Tree Board, and co-chairs the Children’s Area of the Madison Street Festival.

The Overcashs’ have lived in Madison for more than 26 years. They regularly attend Asbury United Methodist Church.

Volunteering is something that Overcash loves doing. She said she wishes to help her community through her volunteering efforts.

“I have met so many wonderful people and have developed lasting relationships with good friends working toward common goals,” Overcash said. “It doesn’t get much better than that.”

Recalling when she visited and helped rebuild Pascagoula, Miss. after Hurricane Katrina, Overcash realized that the United Methodist Committee on Relief chainsaw team from Asbury United Methodist Church made an immediate impact in the communities and lives of those who have lost almost everything.

“This is yet another opportunity where I met, learned from, worked alongside and made life-long friendships – the Chainsaw Gang will forever be my heroes and my life was surely changed that week,” Overcash said.

Serving as the PTA President at Bob Jones for four years was one of Overcash’s many great memories of her time in Madison. She said she believes that the residents and the Madison Education Committee have made the school system what it is today.

“We have an outstanding school system and I am exceptionally proud of the people who worked to bring this jewel to Madison’s crown so many years ago,” Overcash said.

Overcash plans to keep volunteering her time to Madison in whatever way is needed. She said is happy to see the city grow and hopes it continues.

“Madison is where, hopefully, one day our children and grandchildren will return to go church with us at Asbury, attend Madison City Schools, play soccer at Dublin, baseball at Palmer, ride their bikes and play in our parks – it’s home,” Overcash said. “Whatever we can do to help maintain the wonderful community we call home is worth all effort.”
