Inexpensive jewelry, a valuable cause

BY ALLIE HULCHER / REPORTER

The living room of the Madison Manor Nursing home will be transformed into a fundraising jewelry shop Friday.

From 9:30 to 4 pm, jewelry, watches and bags will be on sale to benefit the Residents Activity Fund.

The Residents Activity Fund has been in place for years.  The fund supports events that the residents vote to have, such as ice cream socials.

But the fund also goes towards personal items such as clothing.  For residents that don’t have money, family members or sponsors, this means they are taken care of.

“There was a lady that did not have any family members and needed dentures,” said Nancy Lawler, activities director.  “So we had donations from local churches and the fund to go back to.”

Jewelry saleswoman Amy Turner said every piece of jewelry, including rings, bracelets and necklaces, will be six dollars. A separate table will offer watches and bags for twelve dollars.

“It’s the same jewelry and bags you’d buy at department stores or gift shops, it’s just really affordable,” Turner said.

Turner does fundraisers for hospitals, schools and other organizations.  She approached Madison Manor two years ago about hosting a jewelry sale fundraiser and has done two since then.  Twenty percent of the sales will go to the fund.

“People can benefit themselves as well as help the nursing home,” Turner said.  “Everything is very affordable.  I think they’ll be very surprised.”

Madison Manor Nursing Home is located at 3891 Sullivan Street.
