Local 4-year-old donates locks for love

Many little girls often dream of long, pretty hair.

Hicks donated 11 inches.

Four-year-old Maddie Hicks wants to help other girls make that dream come true.

“I wanted to give my hair to a poor little girl who doesn’t have hair,” Hicks said.

Hicks donated 11 inches of her own hair to the Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to those underprivileged children who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Locks of Love is always in need of hair. The minimum length of donations they accept is 10 inches.

Hicks’ mother, Elizabeth, said Hicks has never drastically cut her hair until now.

“She has only had two short trims her whole life prior to her huge cut,” she said. Hicks was introduced to the foundation through her mother.

“It was my idea, she is only 4 years old and she never heard of it, but she loved it when she heard about it,” Elizabeth said. “I am very proud of Maddie for wanting to do Locks of Love and for being so excited about helping out a child in need. She has always loved helping others, so when I told her about Locks of

Love she was ecstatic to cut her hair and send it away. She had no hesitation at all.”

Elizabeth said it actually takes six to 10 ponytails to make one hairpiece.

“Once we cut the hair we put it in an envelope and sent it off to Florida to the Locks of Love people so a wig can be made,” said Hicks.

Elizabeth said her daughter feels great knowing she is helping a child in need, she is very proud of her donation. For more information about donating to Locks of Love, visit the
