Bucks able to handle Mustangs

BY SCOTT WRIGHT

The Madison Academy Mustangs played host to the Buckhorn Bucks on Saturday night.

The first half was extremely physical with both teams pressing and defending hard. The first half hinged on the two team’s shooting percentages as the Mustangs shot a paltry 36 percent (12/33) while the Bucks shot 54 percent (13/24). Buckhorn led at half 30-28 and were led in scoring by Justin Ward (9 points) and Jay Thomas (8 points). The first half for the Mustangs saw four players with five or more points. An intense first half would build anticipation for the second half.

The older Bucks team would push ahead of a struggling, young Mustang team in the third quarter, out scoring them 17-10 to take a solid nine point lead after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Bucks would keep Madison Academy at arm’s length to take home the win 62-51. The Mustangs were led by Kerryon Johnson with 18 points.

It was Johnson’s intensity and effort that kept the Mustangs’ head above water for the majority of the game. The Bucks were led in scoring by Justin Ward with 15 and Jay Thomas with 14 points. The Mustangs will be back in action on Tuesday night at Decatur.
