Plans revving up for Horizon Fest

Bozos, basketballs and bundt cakes will add up for fun at the 2012 Horizon Fest on March 24.

The Horizon Elementary School PTA sponsors the event.

“It’s not necessarily a fundraiser so much as a fun time for the kids,” PTA President Lauren Plott said. “We make some money for the school, but the main purpose is to promote school spirit and unity between Horizon and the community.”

Proceeds will buy paper, paints and other classroom supplies. “With the lack of state funding, the school’s needs change from big ticket items to just everyday needs,” Plott said.

The first Horizon Fest was held last year. “We’ve learned a lot. It takes many hands to make this possible,” Plott said.

“Room moms” are recruiting parent volunteers, collecting donations and securing items for each room’s themed basket for the silent auction.

Plott expects about 300 people to attend Horizon Fest, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For concessions, the PTA will offer pizza, sodas, water, juice, chips, cookies and other goodies, along with Lawler’s barbecue.

Carnival games will include the Lollipop Tree, Go Fish, bean bag toss, fortune telling, putt-putt golf, Toy Walk, Cake Walk, bowling, Bozo’s Grand Prize, Duck Pond, Ring Toss, tattoos and basketball shots.

Outdoors, children can enjoy an inflatable amusement and speed pitch.

For Bozo’s Grand Prize, individuals will toss a ball into several buckets, each with a prize value. “Our prizes range from bouncy balls and key chains to slap bracelets and punching balloons,” Plott said. “This year, we’ll add new and better prizes.”

The PTA board organizing the event includes Plott, Karen Purser, Nanette Sparrow, Rhonda Jackson, Kathryn Witek, Alisa Henrie, DeAnne Newby, Deborah Edwards, Erin Cornelius, Samantha Bond and Rebecca Franz.

Plott encourages moms — and dads — to serve on the planning committee. “Because we have one year under our belt, it will be an easy event to help with,” she said. “It’s so much fun. The kids have a blast.”
