Two shutouts for Bob Jones soccer teams in first round

Madison-  Andrew Dunn scored two goals, one early and one late, to seal a shutout 3-0 win over Shades Valley Saturday afternoon at Madison City Schools Stadium.  Josh Evans added a goal in between and Andrew DeSilva got the win in goal. Shades Valley could not mount much offense and was credited with only 2 shots on goal. Desilva easily turned those 2 away.

Bob Jones will play a home game against Grissom on Tuesday. The start time will be determined later.

In Pell City, the Bob Jones girls also got a shutout, 2-0 over the higher-seeded Pell City team. Kat Baugh and Hannah Snoddy got the goals.

Bob Jones will now have to face the top-ranked team in the state, Huntsville, also on Tuesday.

For Dunn, the win means his goal of playing in the AHSAA Soccer Championships at John Hunt Park is now within reach. Two more wins and the Bob Jones boys will land a berth in the championships.

“It was a great game. My teammates have been behind me all the way,” said Dunn who missed some key games earlier this season while he was sick. “We play as a team and we won as a team. It was not an individual thing at all.”

Bob Jones swept Grissom this season in two games. Just last Saturday in a game at Grissom, the Patriots won 2-1. Bob Jones won 2-0 early in the season against Grissom.

Dunn said that he likes the attitude of the team. He said the team has had “up’s and down’s” this season.  “When we come together as a team and know that we want to win, we have a good team.  I’m super excited about our team. I think we have a good chance.”

Future plans for Dunn include both soccer and football in college. He plans to follow his heart and his sister to Virginia Tech in the fall.

Dunn, a senior, was the field goal kicker for Bob Jones this past season. He plans to walk on to the football team at Virginia Tech.  He is also considering walking on in soccer.

“My family is from up there and I love the school. I’ve always wanted to go up there,” said Dunn whose sister graduated from there.

For now, Dunn is concentrating on getting Bob Jones to their first trip to the Soccer Championships since the championships moved to Huntsville. And he likes their chance.

Last season Bob Jones got within one win of making the Soccer Championships, losing to Vestavia Hills 4-1.
