Spring Art Fair features students in fine arts

Visual, performing, literary and dramatic arts will be spotlighted at the Spring Art Fair at Bob Jones High School on May 3.

“Please don’t miss this yearly event,” art teacher Robin Lakso said. “Students, family, friends and the community all look forward to an evening with the arts.” Lakso estimates 1,000 students are participating.

The exhibit of Raku, ancient Japanese fired pottery, was created recently at Bob Jones by University of Alabama professors.

Elementary students’ artwork will appear in the small gym with instructors Lora Snyder, Cathy Newby, Sage Murine and Noel Newquist. Middle-school art will be shown in the gym hallway with teachers Raquel Speigel and Sarah Baker.

Bob Jones artwork will hang in the Zompa Auditorium hallways. Lakso, Jennifer Norton and Elizabeth Vaughn teach art classes.

Elementary choirs will sing in the small gym: 5 p.m. – Rainbow; 5:20 p.m., Horizon; 5:40 p.m. – West Madison. Their directors are Kristy Newsome, Traci Stewart and Dani Breitbarth.

Kristy Wheeler’s fashion design students will show design projects in the auditorium hallway.

Bob Jones Winter Guard, sponsored by Kendra Harper, will present this season’s show at 6 p.m., followed by Bob Jones Drumline with director Keith Anderson.

Creative writing students will recite award-winning works in Zompa Auditorium at 6:45 p.m. with teacher Brandy Panagos. At 7 p.m., Anderson will present the Bob Jones Concert Band and director Doyle Thornton will conduct the wind ensemble.

Representatives from UA, Savannah College of Art and Design and Watkins College of Art will meet with families.

Colleges now are requiring art courses for technical majors, she said. “It’s an exciting swing encouraging students to be well-rounded, not only in math and science but also in the humanities and arts.”

The fair validates the students’ hard work, Lakso said. “Students love to perform for friends and family. Some kids come to school for their art or music classes. They find themselves fitting in and making not only friends but a school family in the arts.”

The Spring Art fair culminates “what students have created all year long. It’s always fun, crowded and never ever does anyone leave wishing they hadn’t participated,” Lakso said.

Doors open at 4:45 p.m. The event is free.
