Adkins, Bimini Road slated for gazebo on June 28

The Madison Gazebo Concert on June 28 will have a double bill with guitarist Shane Adkins and improvisational rock band Bimini Road.

Guitarist Shane Adkins

“Shane Adkins is an amazing guitarist,” Laura Pope said. Pope is coordinating the gazebo lineup for Madison Arts Council, sponsor of the series. Adkins will open the concert at 6:30 p.m. in his debut to the gazebo stage.

Adkins is known for his “thumb/finger picking” guitar style, which he promotes as an American musical art form (shaneadkins.com).

In 2003, Adkins won both the International “Home of the Legends” Thumbpicking Contest in Muhlenberg County, Ky. and the fingerstyle guitar contest at the Old Time Fiddler’s Convention in Athens.

In 2002, Adkins was in a trio that performed with Mike Snider at the Grand Ole Opry in Ryman Auditorium. His most prized honor is winning the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in Winfield, Kan. in 2005. He has recorded a CD, “Stomping Ground.”

How does Bimini Road describe its music? Eclectic. Acoustic. Rock and pop. The group has been playing tunes in different member configurations for 20 years.

Bimini Road

Band front man Chuck Puckett describes Bimini Road as “a group of people who have been carrying on a bizarre yet very satisfying musical conversation for many years now” (puckettpublishing.com/biminiroad).

A few of their charts are “Son of a Preacher Man,” “To Love Somebody” in the style of Janis Joplin and “Stop That Train.”

Bimini Road members are Chuck Puckett, guitar, vocals and songwriter; Ruthie Puckett, Chuck’s daughter, with vocals ranging from blues to ballads; drummer Clark Williams Drums, also a singer; and Jason Morgan, bass, guitar and composer.

The band’s favorite artists are Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, Allman Brothers, Bob Dylan and Jefferson Airplane. For more information, visit Facebook/Bimini Road.

Madison Arts Council (MAC) sponsors the gazebo concerts on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. through summer. The free family event includes face painting and balloons for the children. MAC volunteers serve free lemonade and cookies.
