Man caught stealing from YMCA, linked to similar area crimes

Madison police arrested a man accused of stealing and breaking into a car at the Hogan Family YMCA in Madison.

James Stephen Winning, 52, was arrested and charged with one count of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle and two counts of theft of property.

Winning was caught by one of the victims as he was going through the victim’s vehicle in the parking lot of the Madison YMCA.

Police said in a press release that Winning stole keys from the men’s locker room and entered the owner’s in the parking lot.

This is second time he has been arrested for stealing from the YMCA locker room. He was previously in April for stealing from the locker room.

The investigation revealed he has possibly been to several commercial gyms from Central Alabama to Tennessee.

Some of the property recovered from Winning came from a theft, which had previously occurred at a YMCA in Birmingham.

The Madison Police Department is working with area agencies as the investigation continues.
