Library organizes teen groups for Sci-Fi, Pinterest, belly dancing

Summer’s sweaty temperatures and breath-choking humidity haven’t prevented Madison librarians from thinking ahead to fall for local teenagers.

Staff members at Madison Public Library have scheduled a full schedule starting in September and are organizing new interest groups for youth.

“School’s back, but we’re still having fun,” youth services librarian Mandy Pinyan said.

“Are you a teen who loves Dr. Who? Are you a teen who desperately wants to meet him?” Pinyan asked. “Now is your chance.” In August, teens will be forming the Teen Dr. Who Club. “No parents allowed,” Pinyan said.

Also, the Sci-Fi Club will meet on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.

“Each month, we’ll make a new ‘crafty’ piece of jewelry or create a new accessory,” youth services librarian Maggie Allen said. Allen is planning a jewelry class, “I Made This!,” on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.

Also coming to the library is Pinterest, the latest fad in social networking that allows people to share photos and build collections about their hobbies, decorating or fashion. “Love Pinterest? Have you pinned a million crafts but haven’t made any?” Pinyan asked. “Our Pinterest Passion group will tackle a popular, pinned item each month.”

Pinterest Passion followers will gather on Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. “Sometimes, you’ll use a needle; sometimes, you’ll use a drill. No matter what we use, you will walk away with an amazing DIY craft,” Pinyan said. Possible pursuits are wreaths, purses or planters, invisible shelves and paper bead jewelry — all made from salvaged books.

“Belly Dancing with Shahala Liz” is another new activity, which starts on Aug. 30. Beginners will enjoy low-impact aerobic exercise as they learn the basic moves of Middle Eastern dance. “We’ll dance the night away every last Thursday of the month at 6 p.m.,” Allen said. All ages are welcome. “Bring your sense of adventure and get a workout, too.”

Madison Public Library is located at 130 Plaza. Blvd. For more information, call 256-461-0046, send email to mpinyan@hmcpl.org or mallen@hmcpl.org or visit hmcpl.org/madison.
