Adult leagues forming for softball in Madison

For the first time, Madison will have adult softball leagues playing in the city.

Unfortunately, the city’s park and recreation department so far has seen low response to the new sports offering for Madison adults.

“We hope to play the leagues with eight teams, but we may shorten the team numbers, according to the numbers,” Will Hulsey said. Hulsey works as program assistant in the parks and recreation department at Dublin Park.

“We are trying to have a men’s league or a church league. Depending on how many teams sign up for each league will help determine which league will make,” Hulsey said. To-date, more people have shown interest in the church league.

A team roster can include 30 players maximum.

Madison Parks and Recreation will supply the umpires. The league will play on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Games will be played at Intergraph Corporation on fields 1 and 2 at approximately 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m.

In addition, a co-ed league is forming with men and women on the same team. “It’s actually a fun time for both, with not just the men playing,” Hulsey said.

Teams’ play will be governed by rules from the United States Specialty Association (USSSA) with a few, slight modifications. Seven innings or 60 minutes, whichever comes first, will constitute a game.

The fall season is scheduled tentatively from Aug. 27 through Oct. 26. During the season, each team will play 16 games. A championship tournament will be held at the end of the season.

Registration has been extended through Aug. 24 at Dublin Park from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants can pick up registration forms at the gym at Dublin Park.

Entry fee, which includes softballs, is $500 per team. Teams can pay by cash, check payable to City of Madison or credit card. Fees will be due the Monday before the season begins, Hulsey said.
