Can’t get enough sci-fi? Madison Public Library has the interplanetary answer

Attention all teenagers who are science fiction fanatics … Madison Public Library has organized a new group that will take you into that (twilight) zone.

The new Sci-Fi Club will meet at the library on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. Anyone who enjoys the genre, whether it be reading books, watching movies or television shows, is a good candidate to join, youth services librarian Mandy Pinyan said.

“Science fiction is, as a literary genre, an imaginative work that draws on the amazing realm of scientific knowledge and imagination,” Pinyan said.

Pinyan’s personal favorites in science fiction productions include “The Hunger Games,” “Ender’s Game,” “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” “I Robot,” “Snow Crash,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” “Uglies,” “The Giver,” “Divergent” and “Glow.” “The list goes on and on,” she said.

The Sci-Fi club actually had its beginning as the former Anime Club at Madison Public Library. “It kind of morphed on its own to be the Sci-Fi Club. We’ll still have films, food, activities and discussion. The topics will vary,” Pinyan said.

Many teenagers are fans of Dr. Who, who recently has received “an image makeover,” Pinyan said. “He has cute, trendy things being sold and made. Some of our teens have long scarves, similar to those worn on the show.”

“The show is aimed at a young audience. It can be enjoyed on multiple levels, as can be said of much science fiction,” Pinyan said. “You have the entertainment value, but then you have deeper, more intellectual questions and dilemmas posed by the plot(s) and concepts within the universe of the show.”

Youth services librarian Maggie Allen will lead the club, which will meet on the first Thursday of the month at 6 p.m.

No dues are charged for the Sci-Fi Club. “Just show up,” Pinyan said.

For more information, call Allen at 256-461-0046, send email to mallen@hmcpl.org or visit Facebook/MPLYouthServices.
