James Clemens, Liberty light carnival midway on Sept. 14-15

Food, fun and a few frights will be flying at the James Clemens High School and Liberty Middle School Carnival.

The Jets and Lions baseball teams are sponsoring the carnival on Sept. 14 from 5 to 10 p.m. and Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at James Clemens.

Admission is $3. Ride tickets will be sold individually or a $15 armband for unlimited rides.

The schools partnered for the carnival “to raise money for both baseball programs,” volunteer Elaine Ballew said. “James Clemens, although a new school, does not have needed equipment.”

Jets head coach Shane Medlen and Liberty head coach Wes Hopper “look at the program as grades 7-12. The Liberty boys will be coming up through James Clemens,” volunteer Jennifer Hawkins said.

Proceeds will pay for umpires, buses, baseballs and other expenses the school district doesn’t pay. “If money is left over, we have a ‘wish list,'” Hawkins said.

“A carnival is a huge event for the community and requires many volunteers,” Ballew said. Team parents are “coming together to help in all aspects from security and booth rentals to gates.” Cheryl Adkins is event coordinator.

Concessions of cotton candy, popcorn, pizza and funnel cake will be sold. Games of chance will include a “bean bag toss” for a flat-screen television and “tire toss” for tickets to University of Alabama and Auburn University games.

Thrill rides, like the Spinner, Ferris wheel and Zumur and more, will bring excitement to the midway.

Students will enjoy the “Dunk the Teacher” booth manned by faculty members, including football coaches Bill Stewart from James Clemens and Michael Harper from Liberty.

Various vendors, church groups and apartment communities will have booths to sell merchandise, advertise products and distribute information. Booth rental for 10-feet square is $50, or 10-by-20 feet is $100 for for both days. Electricity or water is not available. For booth information, send email to eballew@knology.net.
