Bob Jones dominates James Clemens
It was a game Bob Jones fans will remember for a long time and James Clemens supporters will try to forget.
Bob Jones put the opening week loss behind them in a big way as the Patriots dominated the upstart Jets of James Clemens. By the time it was over the final score was 72-0.
“We tried to play every kid that we brought and we did,” Bob Jones head coach Kevin Rose said after the game. “I thought even when we subbed every kid on the field we were effective running the football. This is going to become a good rivalry down the road. They are just a couple of years away.”
Bob Jones got off to a fast start again this week. Kevin Wright bolted 43 yards on the first play from scrimmage and the Patriots were in the end zone 2 plays later on an eleven- yard touchdown run by Ben Washington.
James Clemens offensive woes started early. Quarterback Heath Burchfield had his second pass of the game intercepted by Paris Erskine whose runback was called back by a holding penalty.
The Patriots quick strike offense struck again with 4:12 in the first quarter on a 29-yard scoring pass from Bates to Ben Washington.
Bates was 7 for 9 passing for 99 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half. Seth Parker played a series at quarterback and took over in the second half.
“He had a good night,” said Rose of Bates. “We started really fast which is important in a rivalry game.”
The Jets defense held Bob Jones to a field goal on the next series as David Mitchell booted a 27 yarder to make it 17-0 in the first quarter.
Bates hooked up with Washington again in the second quarter on a 40-yard scoring pass.
On the next series Bates found tight end Roderick Randolph on a 29-yard scoring strike.
After a Kevin Wright 2-yard touchdown run Seth Parker led the Patriots down the field in the closing seconds of the first half. He hit Thomas Joa for 14 yards to set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Chris Fletcher to make it 44-0 at the half.
On defense, the Patriots did not allow James Clemens to gain a first down in the first half except for on penalties. The Jets had a total of only 10 yards in the first half even though they ran 20 plays.
“We didn’t want them to get any yards, no positive yards at all,” said Bob Jones senior linebacker Drew Davis. “We wanted to dominate them and completely shut them down and that is what we did.” Davis and most of the starting defense came out of the game in the second quarter with Bob Jones up 30-0.
The James Clemens offense crossed midfield for the first time in the game early in the third quarter. Two completions by Burchfield to Josh Garth had the Jets in the red zone. But the Bob Jones backup defense stiffened and sacks by J.D Sims and Brandon Davis forced a turnover on downs.
Will Ragland closed out the scoring in spectacular fashion with a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown. Bob Jones now can look ahead to a visit from Florence in their home opener next Friday.
“We just got to go back to work Monday and get better. Florence will be a big test for our football team,” Rose said.
