UAH shooter Amy Bishop pleads guilty

Amy Bishop pleaded guilty to all counts this afternoon in a Madison County Circuit courtroom.

Bishop was accused of shooting and killing three coworkers at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and wounding three others during a faculty meeting  Feb. 12, 2010.

Dr. Gopi Podila, Dr. Maria Ragland Davis and Dr. Adriel Johnson were killed, and Dr. Joseph Leahy, Dr. Luis Cruz-Vera and Stephanie Monticciolo were wounded.

Update: Sentencing for Bishop will be Sept. 24 at 10 a.m.

A jury is required to hear the evidence against a capital murder defendant who pleads guilty, under Alabama law.

During the hearing where she plead guilty in the courtroom of Judge Alan Mann, Bishop’s attorney said she had been evaluated by a psychologist as late as Sunday.

Bishop rescinded her plea of not guilty by reason of insanity and pleaded guilty to one count of capital murder involving two or more people and three counts of attempted murder.

Judge Mann directed the attorneys in the case not to discuss the case outside the courtroom until after the sentencing hearing.
