Artist Alley to exhibit juried art at Madison Street Festival

Artist Alley will feature 32 imaginative, creative individuals at the Madison Street Festival on Oct. 6.

Each artist applied with three work samples for consideration by a jury committee, coordinator Michele Lee said.

Gina Purcifull will be featured artist in Artist Alley at Madison Street Festival.

“Artist Alley is a culmination of some of the area’s top local artists. These artists have been chosen for their talent — apparent when visitors see them,” Lee said.

The venue allows visitors and patrons to purchase art, meet the artists and learn about their work. “It’s not often that you look at or buy a painting and talk with the artist who created it,” Lee said. These “full-time artists” can show their creations on a more personal level.

Artist Alley’s featured artist is Gina Purcifull, who grew up in Memphis and moved to Huntsville in 2005. Primarily self-taught, Gina enjoyed art as a child, learning techniques in wood and pencil design from her father, a veteran in drafting/printing. For 30-plus years, Purcifull has shown her artwork at festivals and solo exhibits across the South.

Working primarily with reclaimed wood, Purcifull creates brightly colored, quirky paintings and assemblage pieces with folksy flair. Her beloved pet goats, dogs and chickens constantly inspire her work.

The painting category includes acrylic, watercolor, oil and pastel with Maurice Cook, Teresa Batchelor, Holly Morningstar, Bill McCutcheon, Doug Hess, Justin Vowel, Anna Braden, Cathy Rodgers, Toni Smith, Jackie Wilson, Angela True, Robin Stephenson, Dan Curry and Ann Steverson.

Showing handcrafted jewelry will be Bo and Debbie Bordon, Lourie Givens and Monte Perry.

Mixed Media, or pieces composed of more than one medium, will be exhibited by Alex Parsley, Christine Slaten, JJ Vincint, Laurie Popp, Lisa Tyler and Monita Soni. Paula Dickerhoff with Wanna Tangle will show Zentangle designs. Barbara Thornton will bring her class mosaics. Fred Sayers will add a whimsical flair in his work as cartoonist.

For pottery and sculpture, Artist Alley will present Sylvie Popov, gourd artist Teresa Wamble, Antonio da Silva and Moody Davis wood turning. For photography, Darlene Korab with Lagniappe will attend.
